Thesis:
The first day of the Battle of the Somme was filled with horrific miscalculations and staggering losses. This day, like Pearl Harbor, must be remembered in infamy as there were more than 50000 casualities on the British side alone. The British were helping the French (who were being slaughtered in endless fighting at Verdun) stand up to the Germans and end the war. The war didn't end after the Somme.
